Cute indeed. The only thing cute that I saw in Penn Station was my wife as we awaited our boarding call for the Lakeshore Limited in the Metropolitan Lounge which is filled with lots of suits and not a lot of cutes.
Yeah, the main waiting area isn't really that bad considering that it's under a sports arena. I was pleasantly surprised by that. At the end of the day though, Penn and Grand Central both have the same problem. Regardless of how pretty or bland the waiting areas are, the platform areas are dark, dirty, and dingy, and that won't ever change where air rights have been sold and exercised.
On the other hand, since all the trains into both of those stations are electrically powered, it would be more than possible to put in a light-colored ceiling with indirect lighting over the station platforms, resurface the platforms with colorful paving tiles, and end up with a much more pleasant boarding area that would compare favorably with the current state of things.
