Canal check lock - Sept 2008by =pearwood

This evening on the Erie Canal, just east of Pittsford.

There were three of us paddling this time.

The check locks are massive gates that can be lowered into the canal so sections can be drained for maintenance and, especially, to limit flooding should there be a rupture along the causeway across the Irondequoit Creek valley or other locations where the canal is higher than the surrounding terrain.
